Transitional waters (TW) are expanses of shallow coastal water of varying salinity and water volume. They are partially separated from the sea by spits or island chains and link adjacent river basins and marine areas.
Because of their importance for the ecological health of the Baltic Sea, the target areas in the ARTWEI-project are the following cross-border transitional water regions in the southern Baltic Sea:
