Partner & Coordination - phase II

Project partners

The project consists of 11 partners altogether. Each partner contributes with specific experiences and expertise, thus allowing the treatment of the in content complex topics:

Coordination of the project and steering committee

Coordination tasks are in the hands of the Baltic Sea Research Institute Warnemünde (IOW), whereas individual partners take over partial coordination tasks. Additionally the project consists of a steering committee. The steering committee guarantees that the region benefits from the project and that the results hold practical relevance. The committee consists of government representatives, lobbies, representatives of the districts as well as Polish members. Within the scope of the biannual meetings with the project partners, the steering committee has the possibility to evaluate the results and to influence the project with its recommendations.

The three annual cross-border regional conferences “Coastal dialogues” as well as the forum Regional Agenda 21 enable a large group of regional lobbyists, associations, authorities and protagonists to inform themselves about the current project work, to take part in discussions and to participate in the projects. Furthermore the internet-supported information system, the communication platform and the regional newsletter enable each interested party to stay informed and to give input in the discussions.

Through strong project coordination, taking into account both scientific and administrative-political aspects as well as the steering committee of the project, the partner-network within the project is secured. The internet-information-system “ICZM Oder” forms the technical condensation core for the tasks within the project (with participation of the Polish partners).

International integration

Border-crossing Coastal Zone Management, taking interactions with the catchment area into account, cannot be realized through a national project only, but requires cooperating projects under an international umbrella. Therefore the project “ICZM-Oder” is integrated in international activities in many ways and represents a international reference project. The initiative’s objective is to strengthen cooperation between the ICZM-Oder, the UNEP-project (Integrated Coastal Area and River Basin Management demonstration projects), the LOICZ (Land Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone international projects), the EUCC (ICM projects in Europe) and the World Bank (Database of World Bank coastal and marine management projects). In addition to that it is striven for an integration in European networks for ICZM and coastal research.

The intermediate objective is the development of an umbrella project in the framework of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), which covers Polish partner projects, the Polish side of the Oder estuary (the towns of Szczecin and the districts of Police, Goleniow, Swinoujscie as well as Kamien Pomorski) and parts of the lower Oder catchment. This results in an efficient cooperation between Germany and Poland as well as between catchment area and coast.
